Huntsville Achievement School (H.A.S.) exist to provide educational opportunities for students that need something other than the “one size fits all” educational paradigm. We seek to help every student reach his or her full potential in a safe, positive, collaborative, forward thinking, research based environment where the students become not only life-long learners but also successful past their days in school and productive contributing citizens in our world. We immerse our students in a broad liberal arts curriculum with an emphasis on helping them develop the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in our increasingly diverse, interconnected, technologically-driven world. We combine traditional standards of academic rigor and discipline with modern approaches to teaching and learning. We are well aware that advances in technology and communication have dramatically changed our world, and that these changes necessitate corresponding changes in how we educate our children. In today’s knowledge economy, students need new skills It is our goal for our curriculum to help students develop proficiency in seven broad areas:
- Critical thinking and problem solving
- Collaboration across networks
- Agility and adaptability
- Initiative and entrepreneurialism
- Effective oral and written communication
- Accessing and analyzing information
- Curiosity and imagination
We use the Alabama Course of Study in our instruction. Our computer and classroom curriculum directly aligns with the state standards, and all our teachers are certified by the state of Alabama. Our students receive a comprehensive education in all subject areas (language arts, mathematics, biological and physical sciences, and the social sciences). Students in grades 9-12 are required to complete electives in compliance with the Course of Study.
A H.A.S. education is an active partnership among parents, students and faculty that is focused on the academic and personal development of every student. The H.A.S faculty strives to be positive role models who live by the statement “students will not care how much you know if they do not know how much you care.” For over 50 years HAS sought to blaze its own trail providing an educational option in the Huntsville Metro area for the K-12 student where the “one size fits all” education paradigm is not effective.
